community served daily
Located in the heart of San Luis Obispo, The 4 Cats evokes the charm of an old-world café and the whimsy of a bohemian art gallery. Originally built as a coffee roasting facility in 1933, the iconic Art Deco landmark has gradually evolved to become a watering hole and creative venue for locals, tourists, and artists.
The 4 Cats namesake, Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona, Spain opened in 1897 and was a favorite haunt for upstart artists and musicians, including Antoni Gaudi, Isaac Albeniz, and a 17-year-old Pablo Picasso who unveiled his first solo exhibition there.
"A SMALL GROUP OF OUTSIDERS"
Since then, Els Quatre Gats has grown to become a Catalan expression that means “a small group of outsiders” – a nod to the small band of intrepid artists that ate, drank and imagined together.
It’s in that spirit of inclusion and creative possibilities that we welcome you. So whether you’re a regular or first timer, we hope you’ll crave our menu, be stimulated by the art and moved by the live music. But most importantly, we hope you’ll discover a space that nurtures a sense of community and creates the freedom to be and express yourself.
