I have had a deep connection with nature ever since I could remember. My name is April (born in September!) and I was raised on the Central Coast of California. My family home was located up in the hills, far from town. As a young girl, I was usually found barefoot in a dress and ankle deep in mud. Most of my time was spent outside catching lizards, collecting rocks, and admiring wildflowers.

I graduated from San Francisco State University in 2012 with a degree in Visual Communications and Design. After graduating, I bought a handful of one-way tickets, traveled around the world, and eventually landed back where by roots began, on the beautiful Central Coast.

The impermanence of flowers made me appreciate their short existence. How bittersweet it is to watch the colors and life slowly fade away. I strongly believe we are here on this earth to create, so I decided to create permanent pieces of art using nature as my medium. My art consists of dried native and naturalized flowers and plants that are sustainably collected throughout California. My goal is to preserve and honor Nature's beauty and essence. I hope you enjoy browsing!

My love of nature, colors, and beauty was awakened during childhood whilst roaming barefoot in

the countryside of Romania. Early and recurring experiences ranging from watching my father

stomp grapes to make wine; witnessing Spring’s annual arrival; and gathering for family

dinners on the veranda to enjoy summer storms that produced majestic thunder and lightning

shows, filled me with wonder and sparked my imagination.

Growing up within a society consumed by communist ideals and traditions made it so that

individualism, artistry, and freedom of expression were not only discouraged, but punishable

offenses. Despite cultural limitations I was determined to find a way to speak my truth – to be

seen and connect with the people and the world around me. Without access to conventional

art supplies I turned towards nature and used the landscape’s boundless supplies of flowers,

twine, and sand to create images that both illustrated and conveyed my story- echoing my

calls for help.

This is how art became my voice.

Today I “speak” with acrylic paints, wherein I lay my raw reality upon the canvas with each

stroke of color- with an open heart that still desires to be seen and connect through artistic

narration. Finding my voice, through art, has saved me - for art is the key to unabated

expression and serves as reminder that authenticity is the key to freedom.

LIVE | Shadowlands

LIVE | Shadowlands

Mark Davis, Karoline Hausted, Bob & Wendy.
Three strong, distinct songwriters and a cellist.

They were first introduced to each other two years ago in San Luis Obispo by a mutual friend. After several hikes and dinners, and of course lots of jamming, the four discovered a musical chemistry. It seemed inevitable that they would begin co-writing, influencing and inspiring each other, and that is what has happened.

A new entity has emerged: Shadowlands.

The collaboration has resulted in the Shadowlands debut album which will be released January 31, 2015. The album was funded successfully through a Kickstarter campaign and recorded at Laurel Lane Studios in SLO. Damon Castillo has co-produced, engineered and elegantly steered the band through the recording process.

With roots in Denmark and California, Shadowlands evokes a wide open musical landscape, both showcasing their individual voices and the magic of them coming together. Karoline's distinctive piano and voice, Mark's solid guitar and vocals combined with Wendy's vocals and Bob’s cello and mandocello create an ethereal folk-pop sound somewhere in-between The Swell Season, Fleetwood Mac and The Civil Wars.

Shadowlands has already gained considerable attention, the highlights of 2014 being Live Oak Music Festival and the New Times Music Awards – their Restless Mind the winning song in the open category- and extensive local radio airplay. Accolades as separate artists include SLO New Times Music Awards, L.A. Times: Album of the Year and a nomination for a Danish Grammy.

Live Brunch Music | Mark Davis & Karoline Hausted

To Wake You. This Californian/Scandinavian duo consists of Mark Davis and Karoline Hausted, who are best known in the Central Coast for their work in the award-winning group Shadowlands. The two songwriters connected eight years ago prior to the start of a relationship that would inform Hausted’s subsequent immigration from Denmark. The songs on the newly released EP, Beauty In The Smallest Things, were written while the duo lived miles apart, on opposite sides of the globe preparing for a life together in no small part through musical dialogue and collaboration; it became a time of writing songs to and with each other, about the longing, the fears and the mysterious nature of love. To Wake You is music and lyrics written from a rare intimacy and authenticity wrapped in acoustic and atmospheric sound. Solo accolades include a Danish Folk Grammy nomination for Karoline and Mark’s You Came Screaming named Album of the Decade by the Los Angeles Times.

KAIT DUNTON is a Los Angeles based composer & pianist with an unconventional approach to composition and to the piano trio, best expressed by her genre-pushing super group, trioKAIT. Together with bassist Cooper Appelt (Kan Wakan, Station Breaks, Robert Davi) and drummer Jake Reed (Bill Holman, Bruce Forman, Mako), trioKAIT brings a modern, tight and groovy sound to the piano trio format, shuffling wide-ranging influences and Kait’s innovative compositions into a refreshingly modern take on instrumental music that is as uncategorizable as it is infectious. Fused together via Kait’s music, the trio melds into a laser-focused single entity that is captivating, playful and exciting.

Kait has produced and released four albums of original compositions, with a fifth featuring her equally out-of-the-box arranging style. Kait’s latest album, trioKAIT 2, showcases a new evolution in sound and form for the trio, expanding the acoustic piano/electric bass concept to include vintage keyboards, effects pedals and synthesizers. DownBeat gave the album 4.5 stars, writing that “Dunton brings a Technicolor sensibility to everything she touches.” In 2017, trioKAIT Casual, reached #5 on the Jazz Week radio charts, while her debut album, Real & Imagined, continues to draw fans, now with over a million streams on Spotify. Her third record, trioKAIT, made the Huffington Post’s list of “The Best Jazz for 2015” and was featured in Downbeat Magazine as well as on JAZZIZ Magazine’s 33⅓ Anniversary CD. Her second album, Mountain Suitte, features master interpreters Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, John Daversa and Darek Oles. Prior to this, Kait was a member of Snarky Puppy during their formative years in Texas, appearing on their sophomore record, The World is Getting Smaller.

Kait has been recognized on Jazz.com as one of “10 Future Female Jazz Stars” and described by critic Don Heckman as “an extraordinary talent on the rise” with “impressive compositional skills”. Something Else! Reviews writes that “[Kait] throws cold water on any notion that the piano/bass/drums format is an exhausted one. It’s very much alive and well, and here is all the proof you need…” In addition to composition and performance, Kait is also an active educator, heading the Piano Performance program at the Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) in Pasadena, California.
